Lions Seventh-Round Pick on Teams That Avoided Him: ‘They’re Gonna Pay’

by Chris Burke Filed under: Lions , NFL Draft The Lions had all the swagger of a tranquilized sloth in 2008. It’s hard to blame them, really, given their 0-16 season — at some point, even the most cocksure player on that roster (no, not Dan Orlovsky ) had to feel pretty defeated. So as with all new coaches who inherit beaten-down teams, Detroit’s rookie head man Jim Schwartz has set about trying to change the attitude in Motown.

Larry Foote Says Detroit Is ‘A Lot Different From Pittsburgh’

by Ryan Wilson Filed under: Lions , Steelers , NFL Fans , NFL Coaching Good news: Larry Foote is an NFL starter, which is all he wanted. Bad news: he went from the Steelers, twice Super Bowl champs in the past three years, to the Lions, winners of exactly zero games in 2008. In Detroit, Foote will have to adjust to playing middle linebacker in the 4-3, and despite suspect pass-coverage skills , he’ll upgrade the defense.

Malcolm Gladwell: Lions Should Have Run the No-Huddle

by Michael David Smith Filed under: Dolphins , Lions , NFL Media Watch One of the maddening things about the Detroit Lions over the eight-year Matt Millen era — and especially during their winless season in 2008 — was that no matter how awful the team was, the coaches and front office seemed to feel certain that they were doing things the right way, and that they didn’t need to change. Every time Millen addressed the media during his horrendous run as the team’s president, reporters would pose him questions about ways that the Lions should change their approach, and Millen would, without fail, insist that he had the right plan for changing the team’s fortunes, and that they were close to turning the corner. And after Millen was finally fired early in the 2008 season, head coach Rod Marinelli constantly insisted that his approach to coaching was the right one, even as he became the first coach ever to finish a season 0-16.

    Roderick Hood Suitors Lining Up

by Matt Snyder Filed under: Chicago Bears , Browns , Lions , Rams , AFC North , NFC North , NFC West , NFL Free Agency In a cost-cutting measure after the NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals released cornerback Roderick Hood , despite being only a year removed from his 5-interception campaign. It doesn’t appear the 27-year-old is going to have a tough time finding work for this upcoming season. In fact, he’ll likely be able to land a starting job

Lions 2008 Offensive Line: ‘Chickens With Their Heads Cut Off’

by Stephanie Stradley Filed under: Bills , Lions , NFC North , NFL Rumors Former Detroit and current Buffalo offensive linemen, Jonathan Scott doesn’t have kind things to say about the chaos that was the 2008 Lions offense . He claims that there was a lack of communication between the offensive line coach and the offensive coordinator. With one coach telling the linemen to do one thing, and the other saying something else, the players were like “chickens with their heads cut off.” It’s not uncommon for players to dump their old team in the dirt when they depart, especially if that team was an O-fer.

by Stephanie Stradley Filed under: Lions , Texans , NFL Video If you channel surf any, I’m sure you have seen at least promos for the ABC show, Wipeout . The website for the show describes it as the “world’s largest extreme obstacle course designed to provide the most spills, face plants and wipeouts ever seen on television.” Ellen DeGeneres recently invited her two favorite NFL offensive linemen, Ephraim Salaam (Detroit) and Chester Pitts (Houston) to go through the Wipeout obstacle course for her show.

ALA President Issues Statement Concerning the Library Controversy in West Bend, WI

The following is a statement issued by American Library Association President Jim Rettig regarding efforts to remove Library Board members and to restrict materials in the West Bend (Wisconsin) Community Memorial Library: “Last week, the West Bend, Wisconsin Common Council voted to deny reappointment to four Library Board members, based on objections to these members’ ‘ideology’ and their adherence to library policy concerning challenges to materials in the library collection. This move appears to be motivated largely in response to an ongoing campaign that seeks to restrict access to books in the West Bend Community Memorial Library’s young adult collection of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender fiction and nonfiction
