The USC Trojans have hired Lane Kiffin to replace Pete Carroll as the university’s new NCAA college football head coach.  Carroll left USC earlier this week to take the top post with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. Kiffin was a former coach and offensive coordinator under Carroll at USC for 6 years, so the hiring

    College Teams Promote Giving

Many college baseball teams engage in community service and charity, and I want to highlight the efforts of two teams today. Led by senior catcher Mike Melillo, Elon has put together a “Pinch Hit for Haiti” campaign to provide relief for victims of Tuesday's devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western

Jay-Z and Beyonce have more money than me

Jay-Z and Beyonce were just named the Top-Earning Couple In Entertainment racking in a crazy $122 million between June 2008 and June 2009. With Jay’s music empire, Beyonce’s chart topping hits, movie roles and clothing lines the two have more money then one can spend. They both also have endorsement deals with such companies as

Red Light Runners Ticketed By Cameras May Get Their Money Back If Florida Lawsuit Prevails

Another lawsuit has been filed against Florida’s red light camera system. A Lakeland, Florida lawyer has filed a lawsuit against the city of Lakeland and the company that operates the cameras that target people who run red lights . This lawsuit, the third against red light camera operators in the state of Florida, claims the company that runs the cameras does not have the proper state licensing

    Total Devastation

Haiti suffered “massive and broad” destruction from the devastating earthquakes which may result in large number of casualties, including UN peacekeepers still unaccounted for, the UN mission in Haiti said Wednesday. Fifty to 100 UN staff remained unaccounted for a day after the earthquake, said Vicznezo Pugliese, spokesman for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Could New York Jets Host AFC Championship Game?

Call me crazy, but it looks like the New York Jets – the AFC’s 5th seed – could end up hosting the AFC Championship at the Meadowlands in New Jersey next Sunday if a few things bounce their way.  First, it would take the Baltimore Ravens – the AFC’s 6th seed – defeating the Colts

    The McTruth Finally

I can remember that miracle rookie season of 1988, Mark McGwire hitting home runs at a mammoth pace.  Its hard to recall someone coming on the scene and being a slugger like we were witnessing that year.  With his Bash Brother counterpart Jose Canseco, these guys were the talk of baseball. We have heard the Jose Canseco claims that McGwire participated in steriods as they were slugging home runs together in Oakland

    Old Fashioned Shootout Saves Weekend

There’s usually a stinker or two in the NFL Wild Card Weekend , particularly since there’s usually a team or two in one conference or another that, upon further review, made the playoffs by default (this means you, Bengals and, it turned out, Eagles ). This year, the first three playoff games, while they had what looked like interesting matchups, mostly lacked second-half drama.  Game four was headed in that direction, too, with the Packers doing their darnedest to let it get away in the first two minutes, let alone the first two quarters

Red Light Camera Tickets Proving Tough Case To Beat In Florida

There is a reason red light cameras are showing up all over the state of Florida and you just need to look at Brooksville to see why. Since March, the city has collected nearly $300,000 in fines from red light runners . Not only is the city making money the accused offenders are finding it very hard to even challenge these traffic citations

    Turning it Around

I’m just about finished with John Eisenberg ’s excellent book That First Season , about Vince Lombardi ’s first year in Green Bay, 1959, when he turned a team that had not had a winning record in 12 years and was coming off a 1-10-1 season that was not only the worst by record in Packers history, but was so far behind the rest of the league in facilities, prestige and attendance that the situation seemed hopeless. Lombardi , of course, turned the team’s fortunes around immediately, leading Green Bay to winning seasons in each of his nine years at the helm, and six playoff appearances (in a time where 11-2-1 didn’t even get the Pack in the playoffs), and five NFL Championships, including Super Bowls I and II.

Red Sox make offer to Adrian Beltre

Free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre has received a contract offer from the Boston Red Sox, according to ESPNBoston.com. Terms of the deal are not known, and the report says other teams remain interested in Beltre. SI.com speculates the Oakland Athletics may be in contention; ESPNBoston names the A’s, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Angels as possible suitors.

Will Emilio Bonifacio get a starting gig for the Marlins in 2010?

Count me on the side of I hope to hell no. Bonifacio has played in 187 games in the majors and he is 162 for 653 (.248 avg, .617 OPS) with 103 runs scored, 1 homer, 43 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. He has been caught stealing 14 times in his career and he has whiffed an amazing 144 times which is way too many with a player with no power.

Amezaga may not be gone after all

Quote Though Florida non-tendered Alfredo Amezaga earlier this month, “both sides have mutual interest” in seeing the utilityman back in the teal-and-black. Amezaga played in just 27 games last season due to knee surgery, and was non-tendered since he likely would have earned an arbitration raise from his 2009 salary of $1.3MM

    Marlins Make Offer For Chapman

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091220&content_id=7834588&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb Quote By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com 12/20/09 6:05 PM EST MIAMI — When Aroldis Chapman worked out for Major League teams last Tuesday in Houston, a representative from the Marlins was on hand. The club certainly was impressed with what it saw in the left-handed Cuban defector. According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins have made a five-year offer worth $13 million for the hard-throwing lefty.

Root, Root, Root for the Both Teams

Most times when I am watching a sporting event, especially in person, I have a rooting interest.  Though my four favorite men’s college basketball teams have limped out of the gate to a combined 5-37 mark ( Fordham ’s 2-8 record being the best of the bunch), with the Yankees winning the World Series, the Packers have made the playoffs and the Mavericks are off to a fast start, so I’m ok there.  Even though I have some other pro teams I like, there is a clear hierarchy and when push comes to shove I can cheer for my favorites. Usually, if I don’t have any natural affinity for either team — say, in a bowl game or a playoff game that I’m watching for love of the sport — I’ll create a rooting interest.  Maybe one team is the underdog, or one team has a neat story to root for.  Of course, if I’m working the game, I’m not displaying any preference for either team, at least consciously

As a Marlins fan, (and a 22 year-old “Punk” for lack of a better term) I love to research the history of teams and the Stadiums they once occupied. With that said, I would love to see an effort made to bring “Simply Orange” into the circle of sponsors the Florida Marlins have.

Baseball Hall Should Call these Four

Blogs and columns about Baseball Hall of Fame ballots from those of us who will never have an actual ballot are popular this time of year, and with good reason.  The tie to the past, through memories, photographs and statistics, is greater in baseball than in any other sport.  The numbers are there for fans to compare, and though the game has changed some in the past century, it is essentially the same and its statistics look much like those of, say, the 1920’s.

Super Bowl tickets Hot, But Which Team’s Fans Want ‘em Most?

Sure, we know the NFL playoffs haven’t started yet, but the Super Bowl is traditionally among the hottest tickets in all of sports. We thought we’d take a look and see what Super Bowl ticket availability and pricing was like. This year is no exception.
