    NL Arrivals For 2010

There is not a single way to prepare for a NL or AL only keeper league draft.  In these type of leagues, its important to get a good read of who came over from the other league in the off season, and figure out how their skills will do in the new league. As, they go directly to the new player pool that will be available for bidding on in the draft. Each owner in evaluating the players coming over to a new league should consider : the ball park the player is coming from/to the playing time the player may receive with the new team with pitchers coming from AL to NL, the lack of DH in NL suggests better results The list goes on, but lets take a look at the movement with the NL teams this off season.

“Bayonne Bleeder” a UFC Fan, Too

Yesterday being the 35th anniversary of his historic bout with Muhammad Ali that inspired the Rocky movie franchise, “The Bayonne Bleeder” Chuck Wepner found himself fielding a few calls from media over the past few days.  So by the time I got to him the other day, I expected he’d have had enough of talking about Ali, Sylvester Stallone , and that night in Richfield, Ohio, when the man with the most colorful nickname in sports had his day in the spotlight. Chuck Wepner knocks down Muhammad Ali, March 24, 1975 Actually, it was just the opposite.  The 71-year-old was animated and more than happy to discuss the fight that changed his life, and even shared a few things not related to those few weeks in 1975 when he went from a relative unknown — though he had fought some of the biggest names in the heavyweight division at the time, including a victory over Ernie Terrell — to the man who took the Champ the distance. Most surprising to me was his take on the UFC .  A lot of ex-boxers particularly those in their 70s, don’t seem to have much use for mixed martial arts.  Mostly, I think, it’s because they either don’t understand it, or don’t want to.  Wepner, a Jiu Jitsu black belt and karate and judo practitioner for years, calls MMA fighters “unbelievable athletes” and respects how they go toe-to-toe wearing just the small MMA gloves.

Princeton Study: All Calories Are NOT The Same

“High-fructose corn syrup causes characteristics of obesity in rats: Increased body weight, body fat and triglyceride levels”, published in Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior , doi: 10.1016/j.pbb.2010.02.012 : In Experiment 1, male Sprague–Dawley rats were maintained for short term (8 weeks) on (1) 12 h/day of 8% HFCS, (2) 12 h/day 10% sucrose, (3) 24 h/day HFCS, all with ad libitum rodent chow, or (4) ad libitum chow alone. Rats with 12-h access to HFCS gained significantly more body weight than animals given equal access to 10% sucrose, even though they consumed the same number of total calories, but fewer calories from HFCS than sucrose. Although the article aims directly at the difference between High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and sucrose or a sucrose/glucose mixture, I don’t want to address that

    Liam Clancy: 1935 – 2009

(Video: Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem, The Parting Glass , February 1977, National Stadium, Dublin) One year when I was a kid, my brother and I got vinyl records for our birthdays. I was jealous, because he got The Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy , and all I got was The Best of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem . In the long run, though, I won big, because if you look at the end result of that birthday, I’ve got 100s of songs in iTunes that are by The Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem

Running Red Lights In Oldsmar May Become A Concern For Pinellas County

The City Council in Oldsmar , Florida asked one of the largest providers of red light cameras to come to Pinellas County and conduct a traffic study on red light running . It is safe to say that Arizona’s American Traffic Solutions (ATS) had a vested interest in the results, which seemed to raise eyebrows in Oldsmar.

    Stepping Out Of The Frame

I have a geek question in search of a serious answer or a fresh theory: I just read this article at Eureka! Science News about how the genome of an entire family has been sequenced to track how genetic mutations are handed on. The article states “Scientists long had estimated that each parent passes 75 gene mutations to their children.” However, the actual rate of passing on was less than half of what had been estimated — “By comparing the parents’ DNA sequences to those of their children, the researchers estimated with a high degree of certainty that each parent passes 30 mutations — for a total of 60 — to their offspring.” My question is, why was the erroneous estimate so high to begin with? What were they observing that caused them to attribute a passing on of mutations at this level?
