PRINT ARTICLE After an injury filled 2008-2009 regular season, the Boston Celtics have done plenty to make sure they have enough depth on the bench heading into 2010. General manager Danny Ainge stated that “this current group may be the best frontcourt since Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Bill Walton and Scott Wedman played together. Kendrick Perkins and a healthy Kevin Garnett are expected to dominate the post to start for Boston. Pressure for these big men has certainly diminished, knowing their frontcourt options between, Sheed, Big Baby, Sheldon Williams, and Scalabrine. If the Celtics are able to stay healthy and energized going into the playoffs, the city of Boston should have a lot to look forward too. With the added depth to their frontcourt, it seems as though no team in the East can even match up. Celtics-Lakers games will serve as nothing short of spectacular with Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum against Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Kendrick Perkins to start with deep benches filling in. Boston is looking forward to their first regular season contest against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers Tuesday, October 27th.

PRINT ARTICLE Derek Jeter wasted no time surpassing Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio to become the all-time Major League hits leader as a shortstop on Sunday’s game at Safeco Field. In New York’s 10-3 loss against the Seattle Mariners he came out with a three-hit performance, putting him at 2,675 total hits as a shortstop over his 15-year career with the Yankees . “It’s amazing what he’s been able to accomplish, and he’s still got a lot of baseball left,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “A lot of guys, when they try to get that record, it takes them a while.

PRINT ARTICLE Frank Francisco shut down the heart of Boston’s order in 10 pitches to help the Texas Rangers hold on to win 4-3 last night, putting them ahead of the Red Sox in the AL Wildcard race. After blowing the lead in the same scenario last Friday, Francisco found redemption this time around when he fooled Victor Martinez with a split-fingered fastball in the dirt. “I got a little excited,” Francisco said.

PRINT ARTICLE Mark Messier is once again a part of the New York Rangers franchise. This time “the Captain” will act as the assistant to the GM. Many assume Messier is being groomed to replace current GM Glen Sather. Glen Sather and Messier have had great history together dating back to their days in Edmonton, with Sather as Messier’s coach. New York seems like a logical choice for Messier’s foray into the front office. He enjoyed some of the best years of his career in New York and in the fans minds is probably the most popular Ranger of all time. Messier famously led the Rangers to a Stanley Cup in 1994 after a long 54 year drought.

PRINT ARTICLE The Boston Red Sox have recently acquired shortstop Alex Gonzalez from the Cincinnati Reds. He is signed under a $6 million option for next season and dealt for one or two players later to be named. Gonzalez was a member of the Boston Red Sox in 2006 before heading to the Reds. He was not present for the entire 2008 season; sidelined with a fractured knee added on to complications in his right elbow. In his 68 games played with the Reds this season he hit for a .210 average. Despite his below average numbers from the plate, he surely makes up for it on the defensive end. Gonzalez is expected to fill the void in the left side of the infield for Boston this Saturday against the Texas Rangers. The Sox are set to open the series against Texas tonight at 8:05 pm

After failing to close out the series against the Detroit Tigers, Boston is in search of a win to get them back where they need to be.

The game ended 27-25 in favor of the Patriots, after an impressive comeback by the Eagles in the third quarter. Reports mention that the College version of the Classic will be the first of two games played that day; the second game featuring the women’s Hockey East league. The BU/BC match up always makes for a great game. This meeting at Fenway could possibly show as more important to some locals over the NHL Classic. PRINT ARTICLE Bob Nightengale from USA Today recently interviewed Cincinnati Reds and former Boston Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo, as he opened up about his personal use of performance enhancing drugs and its effects on his MLB career. Arroyo claims to take “10 to 12 different things a day, and on the days he pitches; four more things.” The only type of drugs Arroyo will avoid are those that have been clearly banned by Major League Baseball. He went on to address that he and many other players are relentless with their PED use, even if they know certain drugs could be banned in the future. With that said, he states most of the stuff they use could be found over the counter. The androstenedione (andro) supplement was very popular in the late 1990’s early 2000’s. This is the drug Mark McGuire specifically admitted to taking while in the peak of his career. Arroyo was regularly taking this substance before it was banned in 2004; reflecting back said it “made him feel like a monster” when he was on it. Although he got his hands on andro for a few years, he states it wasn’t nearly as strong as some of the other things people were taking. Arroyo is one among few Major Leaguers who will openly talk about their experience in the MLB steroid era. he is currently signed under a $38 million five year contract with the Reds. If he does test positive for any type of drugs he could be suspended and lose millions. He sticks by his decisions and says “I don’t regret a thing.

PRINT ARTICLE Boston Red Sox first basemen Kevin Youkilis and Detroit Tigers pitcher Rick Porcello have both received five game suspensions for instigating a bench clearing brawl last night at Fenway. Porcello’s suspension came with throwing pitches intentionally at Victor Martinez in the first inning and at Youkilis later in the second. After Youkilis was hit, he immediately charged the mound and threw his helmet at the pitcher before pinning him to the ground. Even though both benches were cleared, there were no punches thrown and order was reached just minutes later. Youkilis and Porcello are both appealing their suspensions knowing it will delay the process. The Red Sox and Tigers are set to square off again tonight at Fenway Park at 7:10 pm. The 13-4 Josh Beckett will be making his start for the series against Armando Galarraga. Tickets for Boston Red Sox regular season games are still available here at Aceticket.com!

PRINT ARTICLE Buffalo Bills receiver Terrell Owens missed practice yesterday due to a sprained toe. He reportedly jammed it during a pre-season game against the Tennessee Titans last Sunday, and complained about later that night through his Twitter page. Owens wrote: “My toe is aching!” followed by a concerned face – “:-/” Head coach Dick Jauron said Bills camp was much quieter without their stand-out receiver present. “It was different,” said Jauron. “We know what kind of player he is and what kind of player he’s been his entire career, so when he’s not on the field, you’re aware of the fact.” Hopefully Owens is able to take a couple of days and re-energize himself with T.O’s Honey Toasted Oats before Saturday’s pre-season game against Chicago.

PRINT ARTICLE Heavyweight titlist Vitali Klitschko and challenger Cristobal Arreola have recently reached an agreement to fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, September 26th. Klitschko was originally planning to brawl England’s David Hay until Hay ditched him, later signing a contract to fight Nikolai Valuev instead. In search of a new opponent the 27-0 Arreola was brought up a conversation. The 6-foot-4 250 pounder has not faced many notable opponents, but is coming off a fourth-round KO victory over former title challenger Jameel McCline. Trainer Henry Ramirez had some bold words for the match-up ahead. “He will fight his fight and he’s going to make history. We’re not coming for any moral victories. We’ve going to win the damn fight,” said Ramirez.

PRINT ARTICLE Minnesota Timberwolves recent draft pick Ricky Rubio is still not sure if a deal can be worked out for him to play in the NBA this season. DKV Joventut Badalona (his professional team in Spain) still has him under contract for two more seasons, but has offered a $6.6 million buyout option. Under NBA rules teams can conduct a buyout for no more than $500,000. Timberwolves president David Kahn assures fans that they are doing everything they can to improve the situation. “I believe we kind of know what the parameters are and I think that we have a chance,” said Kahn. “I wouldn’t even begin to state the percentage toward that chance of this being accomplished this season versus next season or even two seasons.

PRINT ARTICLE Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starting pitcher Ervin Santana notched his first win at home this season with a magnificent outing last night against the Tampa Bay Rays. With no help from the bullpen he left Tampa Bay scoreless, only allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Rays left-hander David Price certainly did not make it a pitchers duel, letting up six runs off eight hits in his six innings pitched. Santana has missed 52 games during two stints on the disabled list this season. Last season he won 16 games for the Angel’s, and yesterday was a definite reminder of what the club has been missing all year. “We could see it coming within Ervin,” said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. “A lot of areas on our team needed a performance like that

PRINT ARTICLE Early last season New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady went down with a severe knee injury, after Kansas City Chiefs defensemen Bernard Pollard fell into him. Matt Cassel, who took Brady’s place for the rest of the year landed a big contract with Pollard’s Chiefs for this upcoming season. During yesterday’s training camp practice Pollard thought he was about to be blocked, misread the play and stumbled right into Cassel. After practice Pollard commented on the reoccurrence, saying “I got to the sidelines after that play and I realized what happened. I thought, — OH MY GOD! It’s like a replay.” Despite the same events taking place on that particular play, Cassel luckily did not come out injured. The Kansas City Chiefs will have their first test this Saturday in a pre-season match up against the Houston Texans at 7:00 pm

PRINT ARTICLE Red Sox veteran Mike Lowell blasted two home runs on what should have been a night off for him, propelling Boston to victory over the Detroit Tigers 7-5 last night at Fenway. The substitution took place when Kevin Youkilis was hit by a Rick Porcello fastball in the bottom of the second. Knowing this wasn’t the first time Detroit pitchers have thrown at Youkilis this series, he took action and charged the mound. After a bench clearing brawl that followed, Lowell took over the clean-up spot in place of the ejected Youkilis. “It feels great. I think I still do things even though I’m not playing that day to get myself ready in case I need to go in the game,” said Lowell. “I think the situation we have now is kind of unique and kind of weird

PRINT ARTICLE Former Celtics big man Leon Powe is soon expected to close a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers pending his physical. Powe suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the Celtics first-round playoff series against the Chicago Bulls, and isn’t expected to make a return until this year’s All-Star break. Boston originally planned to sign Powe once he returned to full health, but the option was eliminated after re-signing Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis along with adding Rasheed Wallace and Shelden Williams to the roster. Although the C’s have a complete front court for next season, Leon Powe will definitely be missed. He served as one of the major players off the bench during Boston’s 2008 run for their 18th championship. His most memorable game in a Celtics uniform was in game two of the 2008 NBA Finals against the Lakers when he scored 21 points in 15 minutes. The Celtics will be opening against the Cavaliers for the first game of the season on Tuesday, October 27th. Their first game at the TD Banknorth Garden is scheduled for the day after against the Charlotte Bobcats. Boston Celtics tickets will be available soon!

PRINT ARTICLE Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki hit for the cycle +1 with 7 RBI’s in last night’s 11-5 win over the Chicago Cubs at Coors field. His perfect game from the batter’s box marks the fifth cycle in Rockies history. Tulowitzki also joined the most private club, as he and former Red Sox shortstop John Valentin are the only players in MLB history with an unassisted triple play and a cycle during their careers. Tulowitzki had covered every type of hit but a triple going into his fourth at bat. He hit a frozen rope down the third base line, which left-fielder Alfanso Soriano could not cleanly handle. He then bobbled the ball in the corner and the relay throw went passed third as Tulowitzki awkwardly slid in. Despite the over throw the official mark was a triple. Tulowitzki said he probably wouldn’t have went for third if it wasn’t for right-fielder Brad Hawpe’s encouraging words. “He was like, ‘You know how many chances in your career that you’re going to get to try to get a cycle?’ He said, ‘One, and it’s this one.’ I said, ‘What if I’m on second and the ball’s coming?’ He was like, ‘You’ve still got to go,’” said Tulowitzki.
