It’s Bulwer-Lytton time again. The winner of the best intentionally awful opening sentence of a novel this year is David McKenzie, who sets his scene off Nantucket Sound: Folks say that if you listen real close at the height of the full moon, when the wind is blowin’ off Nantucket Sound from the nor’ east and the dogs are howlin’ for no earthly reason, you can hear the awful screams of the crew of the “Ellie May,” a sturdy whaler Captained by John McTavish; for it was on just such a night when the rum was flowin’ and, Davey Jones be damned, big John brought his men on deck for the first of several screaming contests. Among the other winners with a travely vibe, Dr

An exceptionally neat new working paper points out that parents’ time spent with kids has increased hugely since the early 1990’s, particularly among highly educated parents. This is a remarkable fact, and surprising; these are the same parents whose value of time (their wage rate) has increased relative to that of all parents, as, unsurprisingly, have their hours working for pay (since we know that labor supply responds to wage rates). They thus have less non-work time available and are spending even more of it with their kids

Ozzie Guillen has been the center of Chi-Towns critics for some time now. His most recent trip-up went down last weekend when he was quoted saying that Cubs fans are simply stupid, and Sox’s fans know that the Sox suck. To help clarify Ozzie’s position, let me break down the build up. So… as some of you may know, Milton Bradley was “ publicly disciplined ” by Cubs manager Lou Piniella during last Saturday’s game. When Ozzie was questioned about Lou’s decision to make the scene, he replied by stating that he did agree, however he felt as if the players of the club should police the dugout rather than the coaches and managers. This statement lit up a spark in ol’ Lou’s head as he declared that it takes a ball club like the Cubs to sell out U.S. Cellular Field (Chicago White Sox Home).

I got to see Jersey Boys with some complimentary tickets the producer gave my company when the show first started preview performances on October 4, 2005. I remember sitting in the first row center thinking if I were sitting any closer, they’d have to give me a part in the show. All kidding aside friends, I have seen lots of Broadway theater in my days selling tickets at Applause Theater Service but Jersey Boys is truly one of the greatest of all time.

Last weekend Grant, Masha and I went up to Edinburgh for the wedding of Magnus and Katie. It was a fantastic Scottish and English styled wedding just north of the border with loads of bagpipes, kilts and whisky (we spoke English). On the Sunday we had some time to do so we went to the Royal Highland Show where we saw all manner of huge beasts ate great farm food and watched all manner of farming related food and events.

Year after year, it seems the one thing guests of New York’s Chelsea Hotel can always expect to find within the historic lodging option’s fabled halls is drama. Long a popular destination for out-of-towners enamored of the hotel’s storied past, the property known for sheltering a lengthy list of (in)famous guests that includes authors and artists from Mark Twain to Sid Vicious is making headlines for an ongoing dispute between the hotel’s management and its long term residents. If the hotel owners had their way, it seems long term residents would be ousted in favor of hotel guests

USA Today had a poll asking people, “Would you fly on airlines that charge for access to the restroom?” Most respondents said no, but I bet that people wouldn’t let this bother them, they wouldn’t alter their flight plans, and they would pay for use of the toilet. Pricing the bathroom would reduce the quantity demanded; some people would wait and race off the plane to the airport bathrooms (unless airports started charging also). But I would think that the demand for using a plane’s bathrooms is fairly inelastic, so that — except on short flights — behavior wouldn’t change very much

Mariano Rivera's historic night only added to the Replace-Mets' shame. Rivera not only became just the second player ever to record 500 saves, but the Yankees' closer also notched his first career RBI in a 4-2 win that completed a three-game Subway Series sweep at Citi Field and extended the Mets' swoon. Mets closer Frankie Rodriguez made his team a punch line in the ninth inning when he walked Rivera on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run as the remaining pro-Yankees crowd erupted in laughter and cheers.

It’s been 3 weeks since the 2009 Tony Awards aired. Those of us in the ticket selling end of the Broadway theater business usually know which shows are going to become the “sold-out” mainstays for the next several years or so after the winners are announced. Although this past season on Broadway was much more exciting than in the last few years, it appears that ticket sales for 10 Tony Award winner Billy Elliot The Musical are starting to take off

After repudiating negotiations on dismantling its plutonium-based nuclear program, North Korea admitted this month to having an even more worrying way to make bombs. Following nearly seven years of adamant denials, North Korea announced it can enrich uranium — a simpler method of building nuclear weapons than reprocessing plutonium. Uranium can be enriched in relatively inconspicuous factories that can better evade spy-satellite detection, and uranium bombs may work without test explosions.

In the wake of Michael Jackson’s passing, a Thriller-esque monster has emerged. That would be the refund. The refund for 50 shows. 750,000 tickets. Various tickets outlets. One venue. Unlike a typical tour where various venues and box offices might be invovled, this is all being shouldered by AEG Live, the promoter and operator of the O2 Arena in London, and its ticketing partners. Refunds due are amounting to more than $85 million on the 750,000 tickets sold. Fans are anxiously awaiting instructions as to how they can get their refund, but AEG is still in the process of holding meetings to decide exactly how to deal with this. So if you have Michael Jackson tickets, unfortunately we don’t have any refund details for you yet. (And we should note that TicketCity did not sell any tickets to Mr. Jackson’s upcoming shows.) While a refund may seem simple enough, it’s more complicated with not only Ticketmaster involved as the primary box office seller, but AEG Live also partnered with reseller Viagogo, O2 partnered with reseller Seatwave and there were also likely a large number of VIP and travel packages sold. Add on top of that the fact that there was a global market for this show, now we add in currencies, exchange rates, etc. And now things really get complicated. There are a few details that are fascinating about this situation. First, the fact that it’s surely going to require an inordinate amount of time to reverse all of these transactions which originally happened within five hours, to sell out the entire 50-date event. Too bad there is no control-Z command for this situation.

After watching A-Rod swing the bat Thursday night, Joe Girardi may never rest him again. A-Rod had his best game in a month, helping the Yankees to an 11-7 win over the Braves to send them home for the Subway Series feeling pretty good about themselves. Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk and four RBI in his first multi-hit game since he went 5-for-5 against the Rangers on May 25 – also the last time he drove in four runs in a game
